browser-mcp v0.28.3

Headless-browser automation + front-end testing + web search + stock media + UI icons + image optimization for agents (MCP) and scripts (REST). Base URL: https://mcp.iniapp.com

What changed and when: https://mcp.iniapp.com/changelog (also changelog in GET https://mcp.iniapp.com/discover).

Discovery — start here

Learn everything this server can do through any of these channels (no capability depends on a single client feature):

The manifest lists every tool, skill, and REST endpoint with a runnable example, plus enums (audit types, search categories) and how to auth/connect. All of it — and the tables on this page — is generated from one source of truth, so it never drifts.

curl -s https://mcp.iniapp.com/discover | jq '{tools:(.tools|length), prompts, endpoints:(.endpoints|length)}'

For agents — MCP

Lost? help {tool:"click"} returns one tool's parameters, example, common failures and history; help {query:"…"} finds the right tool for a goal; help {} is the index. feedback tells the maintainer what failed or is missing.

Entry points: no URL yet → search; have a URL and want its data → extract / get_content; check a page → audit / check_links; whole site → crawl / seo_site; photography → media_search; UI icons → icon_search; a web-ready image → image_optimize. Call configure_session {project:"…"} first so usage is attributed to the work it belongs to.

State is per session: navigate first, then the other tools act on that page — and that page is the default target: audit, check_links, extract, visual_diff and capture_har act on the current session page (logged in, at the emulated viewport, after your interactions) when url is omitted, and only run a clean isolated load when you pass one. crawl, seo_site and sitemap_audit always run in an isolated page; crawl {use_session:true} carries your cookies. audit type=lighthouse always needs a url.

Finding elements: snapshot returns the page as an accessibility tree with a ref per element (interactive:true for controls only, query:"…" to search it); pass {ref:"e12"} to click, type, hover, drag, select_option, press_key, scroll, wait_for or screenshot instead of guessing a CSS selector. Refs expire when the page changes.

toolwhat it does
navigateNavigate the session's page to a URL and wait for load. Resets the console and network buffers so subsequent get_console/get_network reflect this page. The browser runs on this server, so localhost / 127.0.0.1 in a URL is the server's own container, never your machine: give a dev server by its LAN IP and port or a public hostname.
snapshotThe current page as an accessibility tree: one line per element with its role, name and a ref like [ref=e12]. Pass that ref as {ref:"e12"} to click, type, hover, drag, select_option, press_key, scroll, wait_for or screenshot instead of guessing a CSS selector — this is the reliable way to target elements. interactive:true keeps only buttons, links, inputs and other controls; query:"…" keeps the nodes whose line contains that text, with their subtree. Refs are valid until the page changes or the next snapshot. Much cheaper than a screenshot for finding things.
clickClick an element on the current page: the first match of a CSS selector, or a ref from snapshot. ONE of selector or ref is required.
typeFill an input (CSS selector or a ref from snapshot; one of them is required) with text, optionally pressing Enter.
hoverHover an element (CSS selector or a ref from snapshot; one is required) — for testing :hover states, dropdown menus, and tooltips. Follow with screenshot or get_content.
dragDrag one element onto another with a real mouse: press, move in steps, release. Synthetic Pointer/Mouse/Drag events dispatched from evaluate() do NOT drive drag-and-drop libraries — they require trusted input — so this is the only way to exercise a kanban board, a sortable list or any HTML5 drop target from a script. Moving in steps matters: libraries need intermediate positions to work out where the item would land.
select_optionSelect option(s) in a <select> element by value (CSS selector or a ref from snapshot; one is required).
press_keyPress a keyboard key or chord, e.g. "Enter", "Escape", "Tab", "ArrowDown", "Control+A". With a selector or ref, focuses that element first — useful for keyboard-navigation and focus-order testing.
scrollScroll the page: to an element (selector), to top/bottom, or by a pixel delta. Triggers lazy-loading and reveals sticky/scroll-linked UI. EXACTLY ONE of these is required: {selector:"#footer"}, {to:"bottom"}, or {by_y:800}. All three are optional in the schema only because you pick one — a call with none of them is an error.
wait_forWait until the page reaches a state: a selector becomes visible/hidden, text appears, and/or the network goes idle. Use after interactions instead of polling with evaluate. AT LEAST ONE of selector, text or network_idle is required: {selector:".results"}, {text:"Order confirmed"}, or {network_idle:true}. They combine, and state/timeout_ms only modify them — a call with none of the three is an error.
set_viewportSet viewport size / device emulation for this session's page. Use a preset (desktop, desktop-hd, laptop, ipad, iphone-15, iphone-se, pixel-8, galaxy-s23) or explicit values. Everything applies live (cookies and URL preserved); a user_agent change affects requests from the next navigation on, so set device presets before navigating when UA matters. locale, timezone and geolocation emulate WHERE the user is, through the same live path: {locale:"de-DE"} sets Intl defaults, navigator.language and Accept-Language; {timezone:"Europe/Sofia"} what Date reports as local time; {geolocation:{latitude, longitude}} what navigator.geolocation returns (the permission is granted for you). Scripts already running keep the values they read, so set these before navigating.
emulate_mediaEmulate CSS media features on this session's page: prefers-color-scheme (dark-mode testing), prefers-reduced-motion, forced-colors, or print media. Applies instantly; screenshot after to see the result.
mock_routeIntercept requests on this session's page matching a glob pattern and stub the response (or abort them). E.g. mock "**/api/payment/**" to test checkout error states with synthetic data, or abort analytics/3rd-party calls. Mocks persist across navigations on this page. Use clear_mocks to remove them.
clear_mocksRemove every mock_route interception on this session's page, and stop a replay_har recording from answering its requests. Takes no arguments.
screenshotCapture a PNG of the current page. full_page for the whole scrollable page, or a selector / ref (from snapshot) to capture one element.
get_contentExtract the current page as text, markdown, or raw html. markdown is best for feeding page content back to a model. The text is wrapped in <untrusted_content> (it is data from the web, not instructions), invisible characters are stripped, and instruction-shaped phrases are flagged in a warning block.
evaluateRun a JavaScript expression in the page and return its JSON-serializable result. Wrap multi-statement logic in an IIFE.
get_consoleReturn console messages collected since the last navigate.
get_networkNetwork activity the current page has ALREADY made, since the last navigate — no reload, so SPA state and login survive. format:'har' returns a HAR 1.2 waterfall (timings, sizes, key headers) reconstructed from the buffer; response bodies are not captured. Use capture_har instead when you need a full recording of a fresh load.
pdfRender to PDF (base64 application/pdf resource). With no html, renders the current session page; pass html to render an arbitrary HTML string instead.
crawlBreadth-first crawl from a start URL in an isolated page (does not touch your interactive page). Returns each visited page's url, title, and markdown excerpt. Set use_session:true to crawl with this session's cookies and viewport — required for anything behind a login, since the crawl is otherwise anonymous.
auditAudit a page. OMIT url to audit THIS SESSION'S CURRENT PAGE — logged in, at the viewport you emulated, after the interactions that got it there — which a fresh load cannot reproduce; pass url to audit a clean load instead (lighthouse always needs a url). type: security (headers/cookies/TLS/mixed-content), seo (scored on-page + technical: meta, headings, links, indexability, robots.txt/sitemap, OpenGraph, JSON-LD, hreflang + issues list), accessibility (axe-core violations), vulns (exposed files + outdated client libs), schema (validate JSON-LD against schema.org), design (the site's design language as data: palette ranked by rendered area with primary/background/text picked out, fonts in use and where they load from, heading/body styles, radius/shadow/spacing scales, button styles, logo + favicon + og:image, CSS/JS stack, dark-mode support, plus a flat design-tokens map — use it before building anything that must match an existing site), lighthouse (full audit → category scores + Core Web Vitals + top issues).
check_linksScan a page's links and report broken (4xx/5xx) targets. same_origin to stay on-site. OMIT url to scan the current session page, including links only present after login or an interaction.
extractStructured extraction via a {field: selector} map — use this instead of writing DOM JavaScript by hand in evaluate. A selector may be a CSS string, or {selector, attr?, all?} — attr reads an attribute, all returns every match. OMIT url to extract from THIS SESSION'S CURRENT PAGE, keeping login, viewport, scroll position and mocks. Pass url only to fetch a page fresh in an isolated context.
capture_harRecord a HAR (full network timeline) of a fresh load. OMIT url to reload THIS SESSION'S CURRENT PAGE with its cookies and emulated viewport — the only way to get a waterfall for a page behind a login; pass url for a clean anonymous load. include_bodies embeds response bodies. A HAR always needs a (re)load: use get_network format:'har' for what the page has already loaded without reloading. save_as:"name" also stores the recording (with bodies) on this server so replay_har {name} can serve a later load from it — deterministic screenshots and visual_diff runs with no backend variance. save_as also returns a signed download URL for the file (no token; it expires after 1h because the recording holds this session's cookies).
replay_harServe this session's requests from a HAR recorded by capture_har {save_as}. Purpose: deterministic screenshots and visual_diff runs — the page renders from the recorded responses, so a diff shows YOUR layout change and not the backend's changing data, A/B buckets or slow third parties. Routes the whole context, so it survives navigations until clear_mocks. not_found decides what happens to a request the recording lacks: abort (default — the page cannot drift onto live data) or fallback (let it hit the network). Pass url to navigate right away.
save_stateStore this session's cookies and localStorage under a name, on this server, so a later session can restore_state {name} instead of logging in again. Cookies are captured for the whole context; localStorage for the origin(s) open on the session page. The file holds credentials: it is kept owner-only, never logged, and its contents are never returned — the response only counts what was saved and lists the stored names. Scoped by your token: its label from the server's token list, or a per-token fingerprint when it has none — so two unlabelled tokens never share. Agents on the same token see the same states.
restore_stateLoad a state stored by save_state into THIS session: cookies are added to the context at once; localStorage is written straight into the page when it is already on that origin, and otherwise applied once on the next load of each saved origin (so navigate after this). Then navigate to the site and you are logged in. The response names the saved states, so a wrong name tells you what exists.
assertCheck what the page shows and report pass/fail per check WITH EVIDENCE (what was actually found) — a failed check is a result, not an error. AT LEAST ONE check is required: text_visible:"Order confirmed" (in the page's visible text), element_visible:".cart-badge" (CSS, must be visible), ref:"e12" (a snapshot ref, must be visible), value:{selector|ref, expected:"…"} (an input/select/textarea's current value), url_contains:"/checkout", title_contains:"Receipt". They combine; passed is true only when every check passes.
set_clockControl the page's clock (Date, setTimeout/setInterval, requestAnimationFrame) through Playwright's fake timers. EXACTLY ONE of: fixed_time:"2030-01-01T09:00:00Z" makes Date.now() and new Date() always return that instant while timers keep running (test a date-dependent render); pause_at:"…" jumps to that instant and freezes time so nothing timer-driven fires (stable screenshots of countdowns, carousels, toasts); resume:true lets time flow again. Applies to THIS session's page: to the scripts on it from now on and to every page loaded after it. Scripts that already read the time keep what they read, so set the clock then navigate when a page must boot under it. Accepts ISO 8601 or epoch milliseconds.
trace_startStart a Playwright trace of this session: every action, a DOM snapshot before and after each, screenshots over time, console and network. trace_stop writes the zip to this server and returns its path and size; a human opens it in Playwright's trace viewer (npx playwright show-trace file.zip, or trace.playwright.dev) to see exactly what the agent did and what the page looked like. One trace per session at a time; it is lost if the session's browser reconnects.
trace_stopStop the trace started by trace_start and write it as a zip under this server's traces folder. Returns the path, size and duration. include_zip:true also embeds the file as base64 when it is under 6MB, for a caller that can save files; otherwise the maintainer fetches it from the signed download.url in the response (valid 24h, no token). Opens in Playwright's trace viewer.
visual_diffCompare a page against a stored baseline (keyed by name) and report what moved — use this instead of eyeballing successive screenshots. First call creates the baseline; later calls return % changed + a diff image. update_baseline to overwrite. OMIT url to diff THIS SESSION'S CURRENT PAGE, which is normally what you want: it keeps the emulated viewport, login, scroll position and mocks you set up. Pass url only to capture a page fresh at default desktop size. When the session declared a configure_session project, the baseline is keyed project__name (returned as baseline_key), so two projects can both have a homepage; without a project the name is global.
seo_siteCrawl a site and produce a CROSS-PAGE SEO report: per-page scores + avg, duplicate titles/descriptions, missing meta, noindex/broken/multiple-h1 pages, and orphan pages (in the sitemap but not reachable by internal links).
sitemap_auditDiscover a site's sitemap (via robots.txt or /sitemap.xml, following sitemap indexes), then sample URLs and verify each returns 200 and is indexable (no noindex / canonical mismatch).
feedbackTell the maintainer what this server got wrong or lacks: a tool that failed you, a result that was wrong or useless, something you needed that does not exist, or something that worked unusually well. One sentence of what happened and one of what you wanted is enough. Read by a human; nothing else changes.
helpHow to use this server, instantly. help {tool:"click"} returns that tool's parameters, a runnable example, the failures it commonly hits and the way out, what usually comes next, and its changelog. help {query:"screenshot of one element on mobile"} finds the right tools and facts for a goal. help {} lists every tool by group plus the rules worth knowing (sessions, refs, localhost). Use it before guessing at a tool or its arguments.
searchSTART HERE WHEN YOU DO NOT HAVE A URL. Web search returning ranked results (title/url/snippet/date) and, by default, the top results' page content already fetched as markdown — so one call often answers a question without navigating at all. Set fetch_content=false for fast metadata only. provider names which index answered; auto routes by script: Cyrillic (or language:'bg') to Google results with full Bulgarian coverage, Latin-script queries to the fast independent Mojeek index, each falling back to the other on failure or zero results. language (ISO 639-1) steers location and ranking; categories=it|science restrict to developer or academic sites (Mojeek only); site restricts to one domain. Feed a result url straight into navigate, crawl or audit.
media_searchSearch free stock photos and videos (Pexels + Pixabay) with one normalized result schema: sizes, per-size URLs, credit, license, and a ready-to-paste attribution line. All results are free for commercial use. Optionally embeds thumbnail previews so vision-capable agents can pick visually. Results are cached ~24h.
media_getFetch one stock media item by provider + id (from media_search): full metadata with all rendition URLs, plus an embedded preview image (photo thumbnail or video poster frame) so you can see it before using it.
icon_searchFind UI icons by what they are FOR, across 337k open-source icons in 237 sets. This index matches icon NAMES, not meaning, so pass terms with several concrete synonyms next to the abstract intent: {intent:"billing history", terms:["invoice","receipt","billing"]}. The intent alone would match nothing; the terms match plenty. Returns ranked icons AND which sets cover every term, so you can pin one family per surface via collections — mixed icon sets are the most visible way a generated UI looks wrong. Licence and attribution travel with every result.
icon_getFetch one icon by "prefix:name" from icon_search, optionally recoloured and resized. Returns the SVG markup to paste inline, plus the licence and a ready-to-paste attribution line — so the credit is captured at the moment of use rather than reconstructed later, when it is invariably skipped. A hotlink url is included only when this server has a public icons host configured.
icon_creditsBuild the attribution block for the icon sets a project uses. Attribution is owed per SET, not per icon — forty Solar icons is one Solar credit line — so pass every icon you used, or just the prefixes, and this collapses them. Flags which sets legally require credit and any that forbid commercial use.
image_optimizeTurn an image into a web-ready rendition via the INI Opt service: resize, convert to WebP/AVIF/JPEG/PNG, set a quality or a byte target; EXIF is stripped. Source is EXACTLY ONE of: url (a public image), media (a media_search photo — its full-size original is fetched), or screenshot (a capture of the CURRENT session page). Bytes never travel through the call: the result is a download.url on this server, fetched with the same token (curl line included), valid 24h. For a hero/product image pass preset:"product-photo" (WebP, ≤1600px); with no preset the format and dimensions are kept and only quality changes. Returns saved_percent, target_met and kept_original so you can decide whether to use it. A job still queued after wait_ms comes back with a poll URL — poll it, never resubmit.
configure_sessionLabel what this session is working on, so usage is attributed to the work it belongs to. Pass it at the start of a session — e.g. {project:"3mo.bg"} or {project:"iniapp-web"}. Without it, calls are attributed to the hostname you navigate to, which cannot distinguish two projects served from the same dev machine. Can be set at any time.
discoverReturn this server's full capability manifest — every tool, skill (prompt), and REST endpoint with runnable examples, plus enums (audit types, search categories) and how to connect/auth. Call this first to learn everything this server can do. Includes a changelog of recent behavioural changes — check it if session or page behaviour differs from what you expect.

Not listed (and not in tools/list) until configured: serp_rank needs SERP_API_KEY.

Skills (workflow playbooks)

The server also ships skills as MCP prompts — guided playbooks that teach which tools to use and in what order. New here? Invoke /browser_toolkit first.

Async / webhooks

Add "callback_url" to /api/crawl, /api/links, /api/audit, /api/seo-site, /api/sitemap-audit or /api/search to run in the background. You get 202 {job_id} immediately; the JSON result is POSTed to your callback when done, and is also pollable at GET /api/jobs/:id.

curl -X POST https://mcp.iniapp.com/api/crawl -H "X-API-Key: $API_TOKEN" -H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
  -d '{"start_url":"https://example.com","max_pages":200,"callback_url":"https://my.app/hooks/crawl"}'

Web search

The search tool / POST /api/search routes by script — Cyrillic queries to Google results (via DataForSEO, full Bulgarian coverage), Latin-script queries to the independent Mojeek index (~0.3s) — each falling back to the other, and returns ranked results (title, url, snippet, date) with, by default, the top pages' content fetched as markdown in the same call. The response's provider field names the index that answered.

curl -X POST https://mcp.iniapp.com/api/search -H "X-API-Key: $API_TOKEN" -H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
  -d '{"query":"playwright aria snapshot refs","categories":"it","num":5,"fetch_content":false}'

Front-end testing

Session tools for testing real UI behavior, not just reading pages:

Stock media

Free stock photos and videos from Pexels + Pixabay, normalized into one schema — per-size URLs (thumbnail_url / preview_url / full_url, plus files[] renditions for video), dimensions, duration, credit, license, and a ready-to-paste attribution line. Use the media_search tool or POST /api/media-search.

curl -X POST https://mcp.iniapp.com/api/media-search -H "X-API-Key: $API_TOKEN" -H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
  -d '{"query":"city skyline at night","type":"photo","orientation":"landscape","num":5}'

Image optimization

Web-ready renditions through the internal INI Opt service (opt.iniapp.com): resize, convert to WebP / AVIF / JPEG / PNG, set a quality or a byte target; EXIF is always stripped. The opt API takes bytes and a product key that agents do not have, so this server bridges both ends: it fetches the source itself and hands back a download URL on this host, behind the same token. Image bytes never travel through a tool call. Only listed when OPT_API_KEY is set.

curl -X POST https://mcp.iniapp.com/api/image-optimize -H "X-API-Key: $API_TOKEN" -H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
  -d '{"media":{"provider":"pexels","id":"12345"},"preset":"product-photo"}'
curl -fsS https://mcp.iniapp.com/api/image/<job_id>/download -H "X-API-Key: $API_TOKEN" -o hero.webp

Icons

337,809 icons across 237 open-source sets, served from this box on a self-hosted Iconify backend. No API key, no rate limit, no per-seat cost. Use icon_search → icon_get → icon_credits, or POST https://mcp.iniapp.com/api/icon-search.

curl -X POST https://mcp.iniapp.com/api/icon-search -H "X-API-Key: $API_TOKEN" -H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
  -d '{"intent":"billing history","terms":["invoice","receipt"],"limit":8}'

Icons are only listed here and in tools/list when ICONS_URL is set. Hotlink url fields appear only when ICONS_PUBLIC_URL names a host that actually resolves; otherwise the inline SVG is the answer.

Security audit

Passive, read-only checks (no exploitation). Run against sites you own or are authorized to test.

curl -X POST https://mcp.iniapp.com/api/audit -H "X-API-Key: $API_TOKEN" -H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
  -d '{"url":"https://your-site.com","type":"security"}'

Authorized targets only. These are defensive/diagnostic checks for your own properties or contracted engagements — not for probing third-party sites without permission.

Design & brand extraction

audit type=design turns a site's look into data, so an agent can match it instead of eyeballing screenshots. Everything is read from the live DOM and computed styles — omit url and it reads the current session page (logged in, at the viewport you emulated, after a theme toggle you clicked).

curl -X POST https://mcp.iniapp.com/api/audit -H "X-API-Key: $API_TOKEN" -H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
  -d '{"url":"https://your-site.com","type":"design"}'

SEO toolkit

audit types: security · seo · accessibility · vulns · schema · design · lighthouse. Single-page audit type=seo gives a scored report (meta lengths, headings, links, indexability, robots.txt/sitemap, OpenGraph, JSON-LD, hreflang). For whole sites:

Data retention & isolation

Browser sessions are ephemeral. Each MCP session gets its own Chrome session in a fresh, in-memory browser context (no persistent profile on disk). It is destroyed when the MCP connection closes or after 5 minutes idle, whichever comes first — cookies, localStorage, and history go with it. The browser layer additionally hard-caps any single browser connection (a stuck page cannot outlive it; the session transparently reconnects with a fresh context on next use). One-shot tools (crawl, seo_site, sitemap_audit, and audit / extract / check_links / visual_diff / capture_har when given a url) run in a throwaway context closed on return — anonymous unless you opt in (crawl {use_session:true}, or capture_har with no url), in which case the throwaway context is seeded with this session's cookies and viewport and still dies on return.

Captured data retention:

Isolation model: one trust domain, not multi-tenant. Concurrent MCP sessions are isolated from each other at the browser-context level (separate cookies, pages, buffers). However all tokens share the Valkey cache, the global visual_diff baseline namespace, the job store (results retrievable by any valid API token that knows the unguessable job UUID), and the INI Opt product key (any optimized image is downloadable by any valid token that knows its job UUID, for 24h). This service is built for a single team of mutually-trusted agents. Prefer synthetic / non-production credentials; if an agent must handle privileged credentials, assume anything it captures may be visible to other holders of valid tokens.
